How to properly install a GFCI outlet?

So my husband installed this GFCI outlet in the bathroom -- and it doesn't work. there is no juice at all. but the old outlet worked fine. He says there were 6 wires, so that means there's a middle series. The lights in the rest of the bathroom work fine. What's missing in the connection? Do we need to get a circuit tester? any tips? thanks
