Was my brother on a date if so why did he lie?

My brother is 27 and gay he recently came out to me, I of course was completely accepting which brought us closer together. Well yesterday he was going out to meet someone, I asked if it was a date and he said no that it was just an old friend. Well he end up at the same restaurant as me and my friend, we were there first and he didn't see us. Well when his "friend" got there he gave him this big hug like my brother literally lifted him off the ground, then when they were siting together my brother kept touching or putting his hand pretty hugh up on his thigh, laughing a lot and got pretty close at one point like whispering close. So was he on a date? if so why lie about? It kind of bothers me that he would lie about something little, I mean does he not trust me or think that i'm faking being supportive?
